Ballerina Michaela DePrince, known for her remarkable journey from war-torn Sierra Leone to international ballet stardom, tragically passed away at the age of 29 last week. Just 24 hours later, her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, also passed away, leaving the family and the world in mourning.

Michaela DePrince, a principal soloist with the Boston Ballet, captured hearts with her inspiring story of resilience and determination. Having overcome incredible odds, she became a beacon of hope in the dance world, known for breaking barriers and redefining what it meant to be a ballerina.

On September 14, the DePrince family took to Facebook to share the devastating news, revealing that Michaela had passed on September 10, and Elaine, 77, died the following day during a routine procedure in preparation for surgery. The family clarified that the two deaths, though only a day apart, were unrelated. “Michaela died before Elaine, and Elaine did not know of Michaela’s passing at the time of her procedure,” they wrote, adding that Elaine had already suffered the loss of three children many years ago and, by the grace of God, was spared the pain of losing a fourth.

Elaine DePrince was instrumental in Michaela’s life, adopting her from an orphanage in Sierra Leone and nurturing her love for ballet. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary journey, with Michaela rising to prominence as a symbol of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity. Their bond was profound, and their untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of those who followed their story.

The Pink Friday 2 deluxe is being scrapped. That’s because Nicki Minaj is blessing fans with Pink Friday 3.

Minaj was going to deliver the PF2: Gag City Reloaded deluxe edition last week, but that has pivoted into the release of Pink Friday 3.

“Instead of doing a DELUXE to Pink Friday 2, I’ve decided to do a brand new album. I’ll still incorporate new songs like #Mamita & [The ‘anxiety’ song] for the remainder of the tour tho…and I’ll announce the new date within the next couple weeks,” Minaj announced. “The new music is just too good to be thrown away on a deluxe album. Last night, the songs I recorded were just way too iconic. I love you guys so much. You know that. I know you do. I’ll still give you something leading up to the announcement, so no worries.”

Michaela Mabinty DePrince, the internationally acclaimed ballet dancer who rose from the ashes of war-torn Sierra Leone to grace some of the world’s most prestigious stages, has passed away at the age of 29. The tragic news was announced on her personal Instagram page by a family spokesperson, though the cause of death remains undisclosed.

DePrince’s family described her death as “sudden,” with her sister, Mia Mabinty DePrince, expressing profound heartbreak. “I am in a state of shock and deep sadness. My beautiful sister is no longer here,” Mia shared. The family’s statement also hailed Michaela as an “unforgettable inspiration,” whose influence spanned across the globe.

Michaela DePrince’s life was one of resilience and triumph. Born in 1995 in Kenema, Sierra Leone, she faced unimaginable adversity early on, losing both parents during the country’s brutal civil war. At just three years old, she was sent to an orphanage, where she was treated harshly due to her vitiligo, a skin condition that caused depigmentation. Despite these challenges, DePrince’s spirit remained unbroken.

She was adopted by an American couple and moved to New Jersey, where her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, fostered her burgeoning love for ballet. From there, Michaela’s talent and determination led her to incredible heights. She became the youngest principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and gained further recognition when she appeared in Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Rapper 50 Cent has decided to withdraw his defamation of character lawsuit against Daphne Joy, the mother of his youngest son. The lawsuit was originally filed back in May after Joy accused 50 Cent of emotional and physical abuse, as well as rape, in a now-deleted Instagram post.

TMZ reports that the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, recently filed new legal documents requesting that the judge dismiss the suit without prejudice. Although the judge has not yet signed off on the request, it is expected to be a formality.

Joy deleted the Instagram post that sparked the lawsuit in July, but it had already garnered significant attention. 50 Cent’s decision to take legal action was seen as a move to protect his reputation, especially given the severe nature of the accusations.

However, it seems 50 Cent has had a change of heart. While the exact reasons for withdrawing the lawsuit remain unclear, the decision to dismiss the case without prejudice means that he retains the right to refile it in the future if he chooses to do so.

The pair, who share a son, have had a tumultuous history, often making headlines for their public disputes. For now, 50 Cent is stepping back from this particular legal battle, leaving the door open for possible reconciliation or further legal action down the road.

But..the sand and surf do create tough decisions when deciding what to wear to a beach wedding.

Regardless if the theme is navy and white for a more formal wedding or a terracotta-themed celebration with blush pink and gold, the setting of the beach wedding is somewhat more casual than a church wedding. You don’t want to dress like a hooligan but rather be chic when you are going to the beach. You want an outfit that complements the relaxed atmosphere like dresses and skirts, but nothing as formal as taffeta gowns more suited to a ball. 

Oh… and don’t get too close to steel toes! Whoever puts on those spiky heels will have those shoes dig right into the sand. 

Speaking of sinking, long-flowing dresses are very likely to drag themselves down, become soggy, and weigh a ton. Now allow me to give you my best recommendations for the styles, colors, fabrics, and accessories suitable for beach weddings.

Tune in for ideas you can say ‘I do’ too!

The Fabric

As for the question of what to wear for a beach wedding, the first thing to consider is fabric.

Trust me when I say you do not wish to be sweating in some bulky material out there in the sand and sun. You’ll be a lot more comfortable in something light and airy! 

Silky satin dresses are prevalent in weddings, however, for beach guest dresses, I always suggest lined chiffon or any other fabric that is light and has a breathable feel to it. The lining allows the dress to have structure without being too puffy and the chiffon is light and lets air through. If it’s an evening wedding, then make sure you carry a beautiful shawl or a jacket in case the temperatures cool down.

Same for the gentlemen, it is recommended that you wear lightweight suits such as cotton or linen for beach-themed weddings.

Also, when it comes to choosing the right length of the fabric, one has to be realistic with the sand and all. Yes, floor-length gowns are pretty in pictures, but they are extremely cumbersome when you are trying to walk barefoot in the sand and have them getting tangled all over the place. A shorter style such as tea length or even the hi-lo avoids the problem but still looks so stylish.

Color

The choice of colors is the key! I always tell people that unless it is instructed by the bride herself, it is advisable to avoid wearing all white. You wouldn’t wish to outshine the bride on her special day, would you? Other than that fashion blunder, there are lots of fun and bright color choices for a beach party.

As for the ladies, I would recommend going for a more pastel type of image that does not have much of a tendency to overheat when you are out on the sand. Light colors like pastels, for example, soft yellows, blush pinks, and sky blues are always refreshing. And they will also look great when photographed next to the ocean. 

Of course, you can choose any color that you like and that suits your skin tone. Perhaps do not choose deeper, darker colors such as black, navy, or dark brown during the hottest part of the day. Those colors will actually warm up and get you sweating within no time.

For the gentlemen, of course, always choose the fabrics and light materials that you are comfortable wearing. However, colors such as tan, gray, and other lighter shades of blue are ideal for a beach theme as they are relaxed. If you fancy, add some subtle prints or textures to your outfit, for instance, a gingham print shirt, linen blend pants, or a shirt with some stripes.

Shoes

The guys can relax in their casual linen pants and sneakers or sandals. 

But girls, I’ve to mention this again, seriously, shoes for a beach wedding…I understand that you wish to look as pretty as a pin in those gorgeous high heels but believe me, the sand is unforgiving! Those needle-like heels are going to stick in the floor and the next thing you know you have tripped in front of everyone. Not cute.

So to sum it up, do not wear very high heels. Yes, yes, I understand you would like to achieve that sexy leg effect in your pictures. But listen, you can wear a wedge or a lower kitten heel and still look absolutely fashionable. They’ll provide a small boost without turning your ankle in the sand.

In fact, there could be no better option than a flat that shines. Maybe a sequined sandal or some beaded flats if you want to glam it up.

How to Accessorize for a Beach Wedding

Starting with jewelry-  the basic principle here is less is more. 

Tender gold or silver chains with a pendant or charm are ideal. Perhaps some small earrings that match the color of your dress. I’d definitely not wear any large statement necklaces or anything that could snag on my beachy waves.

Oh yes, there is one more thing that people often forget about – the sun! Sunglasses are very useful in shielding the eyes from reflected light on water or sand during the event. Find a pair that is happy and bright and goes well with your outfit.

Lastly, select a beach bag that has enough space to accommodate a few necessary items while maintaining a slim profile. Some of the essentials include sunscreen, a cover-up, glasses, etc. Avoid large handbags – clutches, wallets, travel bags, backpacks or tote bags will only burden you in the sand!

What to Wear to a Beach Wedding: Formal, Semi-Formal, Casual 

Formal Beach Wedding

For women, I would suggest a formal tea-length or ankle-length dress that has straps or short sleeves. For glamour, materials such as lace, organza, or silk will also be ideal. So, don’t forget that you can dazzle with accessory statement pieces like jewelry! Concerning shoes, do not wear those that may sink in the sand. Go for dress shoes, sandals, wedges, or bulky heels.

Well, gentlemen, let me disappoint you: a formal beach wedding is not an excuse not to dress formally. You’ll still want a good-looking coat, clean trousers, and a button-up shirt. Just make sure your fabrics are light,  preferred fabrics include linen and cotton. A seersucker suit would also be very beech-appropriate. Avoid wearing open shoes such as sandals or flip flops in favor of formal shoes and thin socks.

Semi-Formal Beach Wedding

Ladies, shorter dresses are recommended with some playful aspects such as the off-the-shoulder or the asymmetric style. Jumpsuits are also suitable for a semi-formal occasion. 

And gents, you can simply keep it on as a shirt. However if one wants to add a little spice to their dressing then a printed sport coat over a formal shirt and trousers is the perfect way to go. As for the footwear, loafers or boat shoes are perfectly suitable.

Casual

The charges stem from a February 2022 incident when Chrisean was found in possession of approximately one pound of cannabis during a traffic stop.

If convicted on both charges, Chrisean could face up to eight years in prison.

Meanwhile, Chrisean’s estranged boyfriend, Blueface, who is also the father of their son, is currently serving a four-year prison sentence for violating parole. The rapper, who has had his own share of legal troubles, is expected to be released by next spring.

Toure shared the story on his blog, calling it the “2nd Worst Interview Situation” he ever encountered—surpassed only by a harrowing encounter with Suge Knight.

At the height of her career, following the release of her critically acclaimed sophomore album My Life, Mary J. Blige was set to be featured in a piece for The New York Times. The plan was simple: Toure would accompany the singer as she revisited her roots in the Schlobaum projects, capturing the story of a rising star returning home. But things didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

Toure recounts how Mary, still new to the industry, was visibly guarded and quick-tempered throughout the day. From the outset, her responses to his questions were curt and dismissive. Harrell explained that Mary’s harsh demeanor was rooted in the trauma of her past, which she was still struggling to overcome, even as her career soared.

Toure chose not to write a negative piece about Mary J. Blige despite the rough day. According to court documents obtained by In Touch, the 66-year-old music mogul has ramped up his efforts, demanding that Kimora, 49, produce private text messages and appear for a deposition this month as part of their ongoing federal court dispute. The case centers around allegations that Kimora used Russell’s shares of their jointly owned energy drink company to bail out her then-husband, Tim Leissner, from jail.

Russell’s recent legal moves indicate that the two have reached an impasse regarding the production of key documents he believes are critical to proving his case. He is specifically seeking communications between Kimora and Tim Leissner related to financial transactions that are at the heart of the dispute, as well as communications between Kimora and her financial advisors. Despite repeated requests, Kimora has not turned over the texts Russell believes are necessary for his case.

“The only text messages Ms. Lee has produced appear to be messages sent or received by Defendant Leissner, not her,” Russell’s lawyer argued, adding that Russell is entitled to messages containing responsive content, excluding those solely between Kimora and Leissner unless third parties were involved in the conversation.

In addition to the document dispute, Russell is pressing for Kimora to attend a deposition in New York. However, Kimora’s legal team has pushed back, arguing that she resides in Los Angeles, where three of her five children—who are school-age minors—live with her. Her lawyer emphasized that Russell is well aware of her location, noting that he has even sued her in Los Angeles previously. Kimora is insisting that the deposition take place in Los Angeles instead.

As tensions between the former couple escalate, a judge has set a hearing for October to address these issues.

Cleotrapa is forging ahead after her tumultuous experience touring with Ice Spice, finding support and a new opportunity with rap veteran Azealia Banks. The 26-year-old rapper, who recently exposed her former friend Ice Spice in a 6-part TikTok series, is set to perform alongside Banks at Terminal 5 in New York City on Halloween.

Azealia Banks, 33, took to X (formerly Twitter) on September 4 to announce the collaboration, using the moment to throw shade at Ice Spice, 24, for her alleged mistreatment of Cleotrapa during the U.S. leg of her Y2K! World Tour. The “212” artist made it clear that Cleotrapa will have a much better experience this time around, emphasizing the respect and professionalism she plans to extend to her fellow artist.

“I don’t like how everyone is trying to make Cleotrapa look. Any fcking who @iamcleotrapa will be performing with me on Halloween Oct 31. at @Terminal5NYC,” Banks wrote. “She will be paid, have her own space to glam, whatever she wants on her rider… because I have fcking respect & class.”

Tameka “Tiny” Harris, wife of rapper T.I., took the witness stand in a federal courtroom in California on Wednesday to address allegations that she and her husband staged a shakedown against MGA Entertainment. The Harris couple has accused the toy giant of stealing the likeness and style of their daughter’s teen pop group, OMG Girlz, to create the wildly popular “L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G.” dolls.

Tiny, who gained fame as a member of the 90s R&B group Xscape and co-wrote the hit song “No Scrubs” for TLC, was the first witness called to testify in the trial that began on Tuesday in Santa Ana. Speaking calmly and measuredly, Tiny firmly denied that the lawsuit was motivated by financial gain. “I’m not here for a money grab. I live very comfortably, me and my husband. We’re doing pretty well for ourselves,” she stated. Tiny emphasized that her primary concern was for the members of the OMG Girlz — her daughter Zonnique “Star” Pullins, Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez, and Breaunna “Babydoll” Womack — who she believes deserve recognition and compensation for their creative contributions.

“It’s more about the girls. I feel like the girls built a brand, and they work hard for it,” Tiny testified. She argued that it was unjust for a large corporation like MGA to profit from the image and style that the OMG Girlz had cultivated without including them in the success. “I don’t feel that it’s right for a big company to come and take something they built and not make them a part of it,” she added.

The ongoing custody battle between actress Halle Berry and her ex-husband, actor Olivier Martinez, has taken a heated turn as both parties exchange serious accusations. Earlier this month, Berry, 58, filed for sole custody of their 10-year-old son, Maceo, citing concerns over Martinez’s ability to address their son’s special needs. Now, Martinez, also 58, is firing back, accusing Berry of attempting to take unfair advantage of him during the legal proceedings.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Berry alleges that Martinez is causing “detrimental harm” to their son by requesting a delay in their upcoming custody hearing. She argues that Maceo, who has been diagnosed with ADHD, specific learning disorders, and mild dyslexia, is struggling academically and is “grade levels” behind in school. Berry claims that Martinez is either “oblivious” to their son’s challenges or is “carelessly disregarding them,” raising concerns about his fitness to make decisions for Maceo.

Berry further alleges that by delaying the custody hearing, Martinez is postponing a “ruling on interventions necessary for the parties’ struggling child” and is using the situation as leverage to “extract” more money from her. She also dismissed Martinez’s claim that he needs to hire an expert to testify on his behalf as “nonsensical,” noting that the third-party witnesses she has called know Maceo intimately.

In response, Martinez filed his own documents, accusing Berry of trying to “bootstrap her way into an immediate hearing” and giving him the “absolute minimum” time to prepare. He claims that Berry is “refusing” to set a hearing date that accommodates his schedule and has denied his request for assistance in covering legal fees despite her substantial earnings. Martinez asserts that he is being unfairly kept from properly defending himself in court and that Berry’s actions are an attempt to “railroad him into” a hasty decision.

Martinez argues that he “cannot be forced to give up his right to discovery or to have sufficient time to prepare his response” simply because Berry is pushing for an expedited hearing. His filings emphasize that he is entitled to a fair opportunity to present his case, especially given the serious nature of the custody dispute.

As the custody battle intensifies, the complexities and emotional toll of co-parenting a child with special needs. With accusations flying on both sides, the case underscores the challenges of navigating custody issues when both parents hold differing views on their child’s welfare. The outcome of this dispute remains uncertain, but it is clear that both Berry and Martinez are prepared for a contentious legal fight over the future of their son, Maceo.

How one model’s unexpected journey to love and fulfillment is a learning lesson to us all: nothing good in life comes easy, and the art of life is following the beat of your own heart. 

Society has morphed a particular path for family and love that we all seem to hold as our gold standard. There is nothing particularly wrong with the “traditional” trajectory of finding love, marriage, kids, and the full nine yards – however, the reality is that so many people do not fit this predetermined mold … and that is a beautiful thing.

It’s beautiful because it creates a diversity of life within our communities and can be a sprouting point for change and passion. 

This is one way to accurately describe the essence of Michella Filipowitz,  art dealer, model, mother, and Co-Founder of the DR Family Foundation. 

I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to discuss her life story, which is a true inspiration when it comes to navigating familial challenges, the quest for love, and forging a career path around what lights your soul up. 

Filipowitz moved out of her home at the ripe age of 15 to pursue a modeling career in Paris. Young, but ready to experience the world, she describes these years as transformative to the person she is today. She made note of one of the first times she realized our society doesn’t have adequate mental health support – when she experienced trauma for the first time and didn’t have an outlet for emotional comfort. 

Fast forward in time, this became her passion project.

A few years later, aged 23, she had her son, Benjamin. Little did she know at the time that he would change her entire world. 

“Right at the time I brought Benjamin into this world, I became a single mother. I, unfortunately like many women, was in an abusive relationship. I am fortunate to have had the tools to escape the toxicity and proceed with my life with Benjamin in the best way I knew possible: leading with love, kindness, and safety.”

“Being a single mother is the hardest job in the entire world. I am so fortunate I had support, but to tell you the truth, I don’t even know how I managed half of the time. What is unique to my and Benjamin’s experience was that he was diagnosed with autism by age 3. The signs leading up to his diagnosis were heartbreaking; I noticed he wasn’t ‘progressing’ as quickly as other children his age, and from there, I knew something was out of his control. It was incredibly hard to accept his diagnosis because I knew what it meant for him, and I refused to accept a life of loneliness, exclusion, and a lack of support for him.”

Filipowitz was living in Miami at the time. She did extensive research on various kinds of therapies, the right kinds of school environments, and more. She explains, “If I have any advice to any parent going through their child being diagnosed with autism, it is to go and get help immediately. Do not procrastinate. The sooner you can engage your child with therapy, it can immensely help alleviate some of the challenges coupled with a disability.” 

After extraneous research, she was able to find the right school for Benjamin. The challenge with many parents in Filipowitz’s case is that private schools tend to reject children with disabilities for fear of them “disrupting” other students, and schools dedicated to serving children with disabilities tend to silo children and break the opportunity for them to interact with children both off and on the spectrum. 

“Then, I met my fiance. At this point in my life, I was working as an art dealer [as I still do]. We hit it off instantly. I remember our first date so vividly. We had a 5-hour lunch. I think when you realize you’ve been chatting with someone you just met for that long, there’s something special. I felt it instantly, and he did too. It may sound cliche to some, but we truly fell in love that day, and I haven’t stopped feeling this way with him since that very day.”

“Spoiler alert, we later got engaged in St. Bart’s, but perhaps that’s a story for another time. He is from Sydney, and he convinced me to move, which meant restarting the process of research, vetting, and selecting the right therapists and schools for Benjamin – he was my number one priority. My fiance knew and embraced this and loves Benjamin like his own son, which is one major reason why I love him so much.”

Filipowitz’s move to Sydney was no easy feat. She realized, similarly to when she was 15 years old in Paris, there was such a lack of mental health and disability support in Australia’s systems. 

“The lack of support is astounding. This has made me value my familial support tenfold. My fiance and his three children accepted Benjamin and me with their whole hearts and open arms; it has been such a beautiful thing. Understanding a child with autism or any disability is challenging, but what defines you, in my eyes, as a good person is putting forth the effort and willingness to learn. I dream of school systems here implementing programs for both students and teachers to better understand disabilities and how to foster communities of kindness rather than judgment. I found that in my family gratefully.”

Filipowitz and her fiance not only have built such a beautiful life via a less “traditional” path, but their passion for spreading love and kindness is expanding. Together, they started their family foundation with Benjamin’s story at the forefront of their mission. Their plan is to build a home for children from all walks of life, whether that be from broken homes, struggling with disabilities, and more to come together in a safe space. Their foundation also helps to cover the costs of school for children in these disadvantaged situations, and they have dreams of expanding into other areas such as helping abused women, hosting community volunteerism events, and more.

At the end of the day, Filipowitz’s life story is an inspiration to us all and is a reflection of just how important finding love and support is. “Benjamin is my first love, my son. He changed my life for the better. Now, my fiance is paving a new pathway to love, acceptance, and warmth in my life.”

The Bronx rapper recently opened up about her search for a New York apartment and reflected on her time living in the “A.”

Get this: on Thursday, August 22, Cardi B took to Instagram Live to address the buzz surrounding her apartment hunt in New York City. While some speculated that her move was tied to her divorce, Cardi B clarified that the decision was work-related. 

“Right now, I’m in the city, and I need to go take a shower,” she shared, revealing that she’s been showering in her engineer’s gym bathroom or renting hotel rooms, which she finds exhausting.

The “Kodak Black” emcee further explained, “I’m going to be coming to have meetings with my label like twice a week. And on top of that, I’m trying to get an office out here.” Cardi B emphasized that she feels “comfortable” in New York, and despite popular belief, she actually lives in her New Jersey home with her children, not in Atlanta.

“I don’t live in Atlanta. I have a house in Atlanta,” she clarified, adding that she rarely spends time there. “I only go to Atlanta like three or four times a year. And probably I go for a week, maybe less. I tried to move to Atlanta in 2018 and I lived there for like six months. And I hated it. I don’t have not one friend in Atlanta, and I don’t have not even one family member in Atlanta. So I just don’t like Atlanta.”

Today, four-time Grammy®-nominated artist Mickey Guyton released her new single, “My Side Of The Country,” available for streaming via Universal Music Group Nashville. The song will appear on her highly anticipated album House on Fire, set to drop on September 27.

In “My Side Of The Country,” Mickey invites listeners to embrace the charm of country living, singing, “We got short beds and tall boys in cowboy boots. We wear Levi’s, take slow rides on Sundays too. And at the local beauty shop, y’all know the tea is always hot.”

The release follows Mickey’s powerful performance at the Democratic National Convention’s opening night at Chicago’s United Center. In interviews with CNN and The Hollywood Reporter, she described the moment as “the greatest honor” and “an opportunity to bring unity.”

Last year, singer DaniLeigh’s brother, Brandon Bills, took legal action against her ex, rapper DaBaby, following a highly publicized altercation at a Los Angeles bowling alley. The incident, which occurred in 2022, involved DaBaby and his entourage allegedly attacking Brandon, leading to a civil lawsuit that has since intensified.

Now, Brandon is seeking a multi-million dollar settlement, demanding over $4 million in damages. According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Brandon is asking for $2 million in general damages and an additional $2 million in special damages.

The road to serving DaBaby with the legal papers has proven challenging. Brandon reportedly hired a private investigator and a process server to track down the rapper, but both efforts were unsuccessful. As a result, the judge approved an alternative method, allowing Brandon to post an advertisement in a newspaper to officially notify DaBaby of the lawsuit.

As of now, a judge has yet to rule on Brandon’s demand for the multi-million dollar settlement.

Five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® Inductee Janet Jackson has unveiled her new Las Vegas residency, JANET JACKSON: LAS VEGAS, debuting at the Resorts World Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas. The residency kicks off with performances on December 30 and 31, 2024, during New Year’s Week, followed by eight additional shows in 2025, including Valentine’s Day Weekend.

Following the success of her “Together Again” Tour, Jackson will bring her iconic style and world-class performances to the one-of-a-kind venue. The residency will feature a spectacular display of starpower and entertainment for fans from around the globe.
