Finally some guard rails with Instagram to protect kids. The massive social media platform is rolling out new separate accounts specifically for users under 18, aiming to make the platform safer for young people amid increasing concerns over social media’s impact on mental health.

About time.

Get this, starting Tuesday in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, new users under 18 will be automatically placed into these more restrictive accounts, and existing teen accounts will be transitioned over the next 60 days. Similar changes will be implemented for teens in the European Union later this year.

Meta is trying to get ahead of kids circumventing the soon to come protections. The company acknowledges the possibility of teenagers lying about their age and has stated it will require more frequent age verification. The company is also developing technology to identify accounts where teens might be pretending to be adults, automatically placing them into restricted teen accounts. These accounts will be private by default, and direct messages will be limited to people teens already follow. Additionally, “sensitive content” will be restricted, and teens will receive notifications if they spend more than 60 minutes on the platform. A “sleep mode” feature will disable notifications and send auto-replies between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

What’s more, teens aged 16 and 17 can opt out of some of these restrictions, while users under 16 will need parental permission to do so. Naomi Gleit, Meta’s head of product, stated, “The three concerns we’re hearing from parents are that their teens are seeing content that they don’t want to see or that they’re getting contacted by people they don’t want to be contacted by or that they’re spending too much on the app. So teen accounts are really focused on addressing those three concerns.”

Timing wise, this move comes as Meta faces lawsuits from multiple U.S. states, alleging that the company has contributed to the youth mental health crisis by creating features that are addictive to children. New York Attorney General Letitia James called Meta’s actions “an important first step,” but emphasized that more needs to be done to protect children from social media harm. While Meta has introduced features like time-limit notifications in the past, these have been criticized for not being strict enough, as teens can easily bypass them without parental supervision.

Basically, with the new teen accounts, Meta provides parents more tools to oversee their children’s activity on Instagram. If parental supervision is enabled, parents can limit their teens’ screen time and see who is messaging their child, offering them a chance to engage in conversations about online safety. Gleit added, “Parents will be able to see, via the family center, who is messaging their teen and hopefully have a conversation with their teen.”

This is a good thing no matter how you slice it.

It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

However, this power comes with a hefty price tag of $700—excluding a disc drive and vertical stand, which are sold separately.

Seven Hundred cash. Sheesh.

Get this: The price has sparked widespread frustration among fans, with many citing concerns over the lack of standout titles, diminishing returns on technology, and the current state of the economy.

Some argue that, when adjusted for inflation, the price isn’t unusually high for a gaming console.

Guessing those people don’t eat ramen regularly.

As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.

I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.

Increasingly, AI has created tension between corporations seeking to streamline product development and trim costs and creatives seeking protections against having their contributions entirely replaced.  In July, this came to a head in the video game industry, where members of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) who perform in video games went on strike for protection against AI encroachment.  Against this background, Christoph Hartmann, CEO of Amazon Games, caused significant controversy last week when he stated that “[in] games, we don’t really have acting” and advocated adding AI to game development. 

In an interview with IGN, a popular video game news source, Hartmann stated that he hoped that AI could lessen the lengthy development times of games because it currently takes “five years per game,” and commented further that “hopefully AI will help us to streamline processes so hand-done work will go fast.  Ideally we can get it down to three years.”  When asked about the SAG-AFTRA strike, Hartmann responded that “especially for games, we don’t really have acting . . . [t]he majority of the team sits in programming and that’s not going to go away because that’s all about innovation.”  He received heavy criticism over these comments, with people pointing to games like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Last of Us, and Cyberpunk 2077, which are extremely popular games largely because the character acting elevates them into a unique and special experience. 

In response to this criticism, an Amazon spokesperson addressed the “confusion” caused by Hartmann’s comments and explained that they were intended to reference internal development teams, and that Amazon Games typically does not have actors on staff.  Amazon stated, “[a]s with any tool, we believe generative AI needs to be used responsibly and we’re carefully exploring how we can use it to help solve the technical challenges development teams face.”   Reading Hartmann’s remarks in context, these “explorations” appear to include the localization of game dialogue in different countries.  Hartmann remarked that “what could be super helpful is localization. We’re currently localizing our game into a certain set of languages. Does it commercially make sense to have it in a language, yes or no? Having AI actually will help us.”  It should be noted that using AI to directly localize voice acting by using an AI copy of an actor’s voice to generate new dialogue in a new language would likely be a violation of the AI protections that SAG-AFTRA members are currently seeking, if the actor has not granted approval or been compensated. 

Sarah Elmaleh, the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement negotiating committee chair, stated in response to Hartmann’s remarks, stating that  “[w]hether game design, localization, programming, acting, anything – these highly specialized and professionalized workers are the ones who understand whether and how AI might be assistive or detrimental in their work. And workers should have the right and the means to advocate for the proper use of this tool.”

As game developers explore new ways to use generative AI, the livelihood of artists, actors, and other creatives remains at risk until the parties can have a productive dialogue.  Negotiation of the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement provides a framework to do this. However, Hartmann’s recent remarks and the reaction to them suggest that this dialogue is still a work in progress.

If you’re into HBCU sports then get this. Allen Media Group has finalized an agreement with Fox-owned stations in Los Angeles and Chicago to broadcast its 2024 college football package under the HBCU Go banner. 

That’s just good to hear because there’s a lot of money in college football on TV and they should get a slice.

Let’s get to the deal. As reported in Variety, this partnership with KCOP-TV in Los Angeles and WPWR-TV in Chicago completes the syndication lineup for HBCU Go football, which will feature 26 games from August 31 to November 23. HBCU Go serves as the television partner for sports programs at the nation’s 107 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With this deal, HBCU Go’s football schedule will be accessible to 95% of U.S. TV households. 

Diving in, HBCU Go has partnered with stations owned by Sinclair, Gray, Tegna, Hearst, Nexstar, and Scripps. 

Additionally, the games will be available on the Armed Forces Network and through Allen Media Group’s TheGrio.com, Local Now, and HBCU Go digital platforms. 

Seems like a big deal, no pun intended. 

Talking about the deal, Byron Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group stated: “Allen Media Group is proud to be the number-one provider of live Black college sports,” 

He went on to say: “It is important for us to showcase these excellent athletes and amazing HBCUs — not just in their hometowns, but to sports fans worldwide.”

Check this out, the upcoming season marks the third year of Allen Media Group’s initiative to ensure wide national distribution of HBCU football. The featured conferences include the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

In terms of time frame, the season will begin with the HBCU Go Pre Show on August 24. The following week, play-by-play analyst Charlie Neal, color commentator Jon Kelly, and sideline reporter Lawrencia Moten will provide live game coverage. The season’s first game will feature Clark Atlanta University against Fort Valley State University.

Feels good all around, especially in the world of Black media.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is not immune to crypto scams. The “In the Club” rapper turned media mogul, revealed he was the victim of a cryptocurrency scam that netted hackers millions of dollars. 

Jackson shared on Instagram that his Twitter account and website, Thisis50.com, were hacked to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency, resulting in a $3 million gain for the scammers within 30 minutes.

“My Twitter & Thisis 50.com was hacked,” 50 Cent wrote. “I have no association with this Crypto. Twitter worked quickly to lock my account back down. Whoever did this made $3,000,000 in 30 minutes.”

Get this: the hackers used a tactic known as a “pump-and-dump” scheme, where they flooded the accounts with promotional messages to inflate the cryptocurrency’s value artificially. Screenshots in 50 Cent’s post showed the $GUNIT crypto skyrocketing from under $1 million in market value.

This incident highlights social media platforms’ vulnerability to security breaches and the ease with which they can be exploited for financial scams. Ek continued reflecting on enduring ideas: “For example, we’re witnessing a resurgence of Stoicism, with many of Marcus Aurelius’s insights still resonating thousands of years later. This makes me wonder: what are the most unintuitive, yet enduring ideas that aren’t frequently discussed today but might have a long shelf life? Also, what are we creating now that will still be valued and discussed hundreds or thousands of years from today?”

Musicians and music fans quickly criticized Ek’s remarks. Composer Tim Prebble responded, “Music will still be valued in a hundred years. Spotify won’t. It will only be remembered as a bad example of a parasitic tool for extracting value from other peoples music. (or ‘content’ as some grifters like to call it).”

Other users echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the low payouts Spotify provides to artists per stream. Primal Scream bassist Simone Marie Butler bluntly commented, “Fuck off you out of touch billionaire.” The Future of Music Coalition added, “It actually can still be expensive to make records, especially if you care about paying your collaborators fairly. I used AI tools like Midjourney and various others to create Freaky KEKE, her image, her chart, and how everything would look. It took me about a week to solidify her story. Then, AI taught me how to tokenize and audit her contracts, making her rug-proof with renounced contracts and burned tokens. Not only is she historic for being the first AI-generated character on the blockchain, but she is also historical because she’s the first project to debut on two blockchains at the same time,” he continues. 

“She debuted on Ethereum and Solana on the same day at the same time — and she was successful. Most people don’t do that because they fear one will do better than the other. So they tend to do one, and that’s that. Interestingly enough, she has been neck and neck on both blockchains, and she’s the first project to do that.

“The cool part about it is the more people talk, the more AI learns; ChatGPT and Grok absorb this information and apply it to their database. To prevent cloning, all tokens were divided across the Ethereum (ETH-USD) and Solana (USD-SOL) blockchains, the most popular blockchains for meme tokens like Shiba Inu (SHIB-USD), Pepe (PEPE-USD), and Dogecoin (DOGE-USD). A portion of tokens was also reserved for future exchanges that show interest in adopting the token into their marketplace.

Spotify has been issued a cease and desist order from the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) for hosting lyrics, music videos, and podcast content without proper licensing.

According to Billboard, the NMPA demands the removal “or Spotify will face copyright liability for continued use of these works.”

Earlier this month, Spotify was noted to cut $150M in royalties from music publishers and songwriters beyond what was already expected. This results from adding audiobooks into certain plans, adding books to the total subscription price.

The letter reads, “Spotify appears to be engaged in direct infringement by hosting unlicensed musical works in its lyrics, videos and podcasts and by distributing unauthorized reproductions, synchronizations, displays and derivative sues of these musical works to its users. Making matters worse, Spotify profits from such infringement.”

In response, a Spotify spokesperson stated: “This letter is a press stunt filled with false and misleading claims. It’s an attempt to deflect from the Phono IV deal that the NMPA agreed to and celebrated back in 2022. We paid a record amount to benefit songwriters in 2023, and we are on track to exceed this amount in 2024. Spotify is a platform for licensed content. We are committed to the integrity of our platform, and we have a clear process in place for rightsholders to contact Spotify about any content they believe is unlicensed.”

BLK, the number one dating and lifestyle app for the Black community, proudly unveils their new endeavor: The BLK MBA (Master of Black Affection) Program. Created to empower and support recent graduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) facing post-graduation employment challenges, this innovative initiative seeks to redefine both professional and dating dynamics, while providing financial support to young job-seekers.

At its core, the BLK MBA Program creates an opportunity for recent HBCU graduates to navigate the journey from academia to the workforce. Despite improving graduation rates, systemic and cultural obstacles often obstruct the path to employment for Black graduates. African-Americans with college degrees are twice as likely to be unemployed as other graduates, with 12.4 percent of Black college graduates being unemployed, a rate significantly higher than the 5.6 percent average for all college graduates. BLK recognizes the need for solutions to fix this gap.

Enter the BLK MBA Program – a purpose-driven initiative designed to empower and support recent HBCU graduates struggling to find employment after college. But this isn’t your traditional MBA program – there will be no coursework or thesis statements. Instead, BLK will select three outstanding graduates from HBCUs, inviting them to embark on a summer of growth and discovery. These participants will immerse themselves in the vibrant BLK community, exploring networking and connections on the app. Along the way, they’ll share feedback to make the user experience even better, working alongside the brand to gain a deeper understanding of how Black Gen-Z approaches dating, networking and creating connections. Each participant will be awarded a stipend to support them during their journey.

“Our commitment to the Black community transcends the realms of just dating,” says Jonathan Kirkland, Head of Marketing at BLK. “The BLK MBA Program showcases our dedication to creating opportunities for professional growth and personal development for recent HBCU graduates. Through this initiative, we hope not only to address the employment challenges faced by Black graduates but also to enrich our platform with diverse perspectives and experiences.”

The application process for the BLK MBA Program commences in May, inviting recent HBCU graduates to apply. Applicants will be required to submit their resumes and a personal statement that showcases both their desire and need to be a part of the program. A panel of judges, comprising BLK brand team members and Black leaders from the BLK Advocacy Council, will evaluate applications to select three participants based on academic achievements, personal statements, and potential contributions.

Selected participants will embark on a transformative journey throughout the summer, immersing themselves in the vibrant BLK community to hone their networking skills and forge meaningful connections with other Black singles, recent graduates, young professionals and Black business leaders. Participants will proactively network, arrange meetings, and go on dates with the goal of fostering relationships that could lead to meaningful relationships and valuable job opportunities. As they navigate the digital dating landscape, participants will not only shape the future of dating experiences for Black Gen-Z individuals but also gain invaluable insights into effective networking strategies.

A recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos reveals a divided sentiment among U.S. adults regarding the potential ban of TikTok. How surprising. Sarcasm. ByteDance, a China-based tech company, owns the popular social media app. With an ambitious law on the horizon that could effectively ban TikTok nationwide by January 2025, about half of Americans express support for the drastic measure, citing concerns over data privacy and Chinese influence.

The legislation, known as the “Protecting Americans’ Data From Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024,” signed by President Biden after receiving bipartisan support in Congress, mandates ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok within nine months to a non-“foreign adversary” entity. That’s a bold statement, but the lawmakers are serious about this. Failure to comply would result in the app’s distribution being prohibited in America. TikTok intends to challenge the law on First Amendment grounds, but the ban may become a reality if unsuccessful. ByteDance has no plans to sell its interest in the platform.

According to the poll, approximately 50% of Americans support a TikTok ban, 32% oppose it, and 18% are undecided. Concerns about Chinese government surveillance and influence loom large, with 55% believing ByteDance utilizes TikTok to sway public opinion and 46% suspecting espionage activities by the Chinese government.

Senator Maria Cantwell has raised alarms, suggesting that TikTok and ByteDance exploit data and artificial intelligence for surveillance purposes, even targeting journalists covering the company. Past incidents, such as ByteDance firing employees for unauthorized access to TikTok data, further fuel apprehensions.

Concerns about the repercussions of a TikTok ban exist. Ninety percent of respondents believe content creators would migrate to alternative platforms, while 45% worry about adverse effects on small businesses and performing artists. Additionally, 46% fear potential infringements on free speech rights.

The Ipsos/Reuters poll, conducted from April 29-30 with a sample size of 1,022 U.S. residents aged 18 or older, highlights the complexity of public opinion on the TikTok ban issue, with a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.2 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

Whatever happens, TikTok has become an influential staple in pop culture, but the connection to China has some people concerned, and possibly, rightfully so.

Artificial Intelligence is getting smarter, funnier, and in some ways creepier. Arguably a photo of the most famous painting, the Mona Lisa is capable of doing more than just smirking, with the help of Microsoft’s brand new artificial intelligence technology.

Researchers at Microsoft detailed VASA-1, a new AI model they developed that takes still images of a face with an audio clip of anyone speaking, and it automatically creates a pretty realistic video of that person’s photo speaking. The videos are compelling, with lip-syncing, and natural face, and head movements—spooky stuff. 

Get this: in one demo video, the Microsoft researchers animated an image of the Mona Lisa to spit a comedic rap, originally by actor Anne Hathaway. Well at least it wasn’t a real artist, then we’d have more AI controversy on our hands. 

The output result may be entertaining but may also feel jarring in the product’s authenticity. It just feels too real for some. Now Microsoft said the tech could work within educational applications or, as they put it, “improving accessibility for individuals with communication challenges,” or even virtual companions for humans. Now, that all sounds good, but it may be used for impersonating people and other nefarious uses. Imagine this AI technology used to disrupt creative industries from film to advertising and more.

Microsoft says it is not releasing the VASA-1 model to the public just yet. “We are opposed to any behavior that creates misleading or harmful contents about real persons,” Microsoft researchers said in a recent blog post. They added that they have “no plans to release” the product publicly “until we are certain that the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations.”

The Mona Lisa rapping and all that is fun and games, but until this technology can be responsibly managed, it seems like it’s ripe for potential issues in a world where there’s already enough misinformation floating around. So, the jury is out on this one.

If you or your kids use TikTok, don’t feel bad because pretty much every social media user does; then you may have noticed a lack of certain music from your favorite artists on the platform. There’s a standoff regarding royalty payments and AI policies. Variety reports that it has “resulted in a near-complete blackout of all music owned, distributed, and published by the company on the platform.” Now get this: the videos are still on and popping on the platform, but the actual music is being muted – yikes.

Now it gets murky because new songs from UMG artists, like stars Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Niall Horan, can still be discovered on TikTok as of yesterday, but what is the reason is the real question? Variety didn’t have any comment from reps at UMG and TikTok, who both declined.

So, if you don’t know how the whole music on TikTok thing works, it goes like this, as Variety reports: Rights-holders, such as record labels, are not the only way music can be uploaded onto TikTok. Pretty much anyone uploads music and displays it as “original sound” on a user’s post. Then, said sound can be used by virtually anyone on TikTok, including artists. Once that music is on the platform, the rights-holders lose control over the content, and all they can do is send off takedown notices and other notifications via legal means. So it falls on TikTok to follow through by detecting, policing and muting the unauthorized music floating around on its platform. Are you exhausted from that rundown? We are. 

Even though reps from the label declined to comment to Variety, UMG spoke on the situation broadly. They’re, in essence, directing fault to TikTok’s detection software. They dropped a letter to artists breaking down the ban. “TikTok makes little effort to deal with the vast amounts of content on its platform that infringe our artists’ music and it has offered no meaningful solutions to the rising tide of content adjacency issues, let alone the tidal wave of hate speech, bigotry, bullying and harassment on the platform,” from an excerpt of the letter. “The only means available to seek the removal of infringing or problematic content (such as pornographic deepfakes of artists) is through the monumentally cumbersome and inefficient process which equates to the digital equivalent of ‘Whack-a-Mole.’ … We will always fight for our artists and songwriters and stand up for the creative and commercial value of music.” It seems like this is not going to end soon.

According to CNN Business, the bitcoin surge is a product of billions pouring into the cryptocurrency after the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved bitcoin exchange-traded funds in January.

Adding to the rise is “halving,” which is a feature of bitcoin that reduces the rate of new coins in circulation every year, making the price go higher.

Conversely, investors are optimistic that halving won’t lead to a positive period and are looking to cash out on the surge. The surge has led to an impact on Coinbase.

The Black Eyed Peas artist recently announced his newest radio show called will.i.am Presents the FYI Show, with a computer-generated co-host named qd.pi (cutie pie). Premiering on SiriusXM, the show will feature in-depth conversations about music, culture, and technology.

Eminem Hosts Virtual Fortnite Concert to Tease New Features of Game's Upcoming Chapter 5 Debut

Eminem rolled out a new chapter this week, but it wasn’t an album or even an autobiography. Instead, the rapper became the latest major artist to hold a virtual concert in Fortnite, this time in conjunction with the game’s upoming Chapter 5 release (which is slated for December 3).

The event, which was called the “Big Bang Event,” lasted around 10 minutes on Saturday and combined Em’s musical performance with teasers for the game’s upcoming release. Before the event, Epic teased some upcoming features of Chapter 5 including a new island, a new train, revamped movement mechanics, new weapon mods and attachments, even more cross-overs, and the ability to heal and move at the same time.

The “Big Bang Event” started on Fortnite OG island, where viewers caught a quick highlight reel from the game’s past including a rocket launch and meteor crash before everything was sucked into a black hole, which transported players to a variety of themed portals including an island with Lego characters, a car race, and finally a stadium in which Eminem appeared to perform “Lose Yourself” as the screen showed players hitting notes in time to the music (a la Guitar Hero). A giant hand crushed the set and a larger-than-life Eminem appeared to perform “Godzilla,” all while showing the new graphics capabilities that Epic has rolled out for Chapter 5.

Chapter 5 is expected to demonstrate how Epic hopes to take Fortnite from a battle royale game to one that is more creator-focused similar to Roblox. Epic has also added more partnerships including one with Lego (Lego Fortnite is expected to debut December 7th), Rocket Racing (developed by Rocket League creator Psyonix and expected to debut December 8th), and Fortnite Festival (developed by Rock Band studio Harmonix and expected to launch on December 9th).

Eminem’s virtual concert marks the fourth major in-game musical experience, coming on the heels of performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and Ariana Grande.

In a groundbreaking move for music enthusiasts, TikTok has introduced “Add to Music App,” a revolutionary feature enabling users in the US and UK to save discovered songs directly to their preferred streaming service effortlessly. This innovation, in partnership with major platforms like Amazon Music and Spotify, enhances TikTok’s reputation as a global hub for music discovery.

The Add to Music App feature simplifies the process for fans to celebrate and revisit their favorite tunes from the For You feed. Users will now find an “Add Song” option next to track details at the bottom of TikTok videos, allowing them to save the song to their chosen streaming service seamlessly. The default playlist option is available, or users can opt to add the track to a new or existing playlist of their creation. This user-friendly feature is accessible from the For You feed and an artist’s Sound Detail Page.

“TikTok is already the world’s most powerful platform for music discovery and promotion, which helps artists connect with our global community to drive engagement with their music. Add to Music App takes this process a step further, creating a direct link between discovery on TikTok and consumption on a music streaming service, making it easier than ever for music fans to enjoy the full length song on the music streaming service of their choice, thereby generating even greater value for artists and rightsholders,” said Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok.

“Some of the best parts of being a music lover are those serendipitous moments when you discover a new song or artist that you connect with instantly. At Amazon Music, we’re looking to make it easier to convert those moments into enduring fandom. That’s why we worked together with TikTok on the Add to Music App feature, which makes it easier for fans to listen to the music they love and for artists to build fandom,” said Karolina Joynathsing, Director of Business Development for Amazon Music.

That means being everywhere our users are and creating seamless ways to save songs to Spotify to enjoy when and how they choose to listen. Snoop Dogg and Son Announce their own Fornite game studio to promote diverse creators

Rapper Snoop Dogg has spent the last several decades adding almost as many successful business ventures to his portfolio as he has musical awards to his artistic accomplishments. And this week, he diversified his business portfolio even more, stepping into the world of tech with his son, Cordell Broadus, as the two announced Death Row Games, a Fortnite-based game studio designed to provide access and opportunity to diverse creators and broaden the narrative around gaming.

The game studio relies on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), a community-based platform that allows anyone from individual creators to professional gaming studios to create content using open-source code. (Epic Games takes a 5% royalty fee from most developers who sell their content via the platform.) The versatile code allows creators to create games that are usually functional on most consoles including Xbox, Playstation, PC, and VR devices.

Snoop stated that he and his son have been experimenting with game publishing for the last few years, but on an amateur level. They decided to start Death Row Games as a way to make
“a home for diverse creators in the gaming ecosystem and be a part of the narrative, the storytelling of what the next game should be looking like. And I keep saying ‘show representation of the culture in these sectors,’ versus us just being the talent. We wanted to make sure that we’re part of the decision that’s being made and more importantly tell these stories from diverse creators and focus on creatives in underserved communities.”

For those that may not be aware, Snoop has been involved in the gaming industry for quite some time, participating in the esports gaming collective FaZe Clan and also had a custom skin in Call of Duty and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In 2019, he launched his own esports tournament series, the Gangsta Gaming League and in 2021, he dropped an exclusive NFT collection titled “A Journey with the Dogg.” In 2013, the rapper also debuted the Snoopify app, which allows users to add Snoop Dogg-themed stickers and graphics to their personal photos.

Death Row Games will join Snoop’s other business ventures, which have an estimated net worth of $160 million and include Snoop Doggie Dogg’s pet product line, venture capital firm Casa Verde Capital, the Leafs by Snoop cannabis brand, Snoopadelic Films, his Indoggo gin line, and several more. Cordell, Snoop’s second-oldest son, also has experience in the game design and NFT space.

No word if Snoop will show up like Travis Scott to perform a Fortnite concert for fans yet, but Snoop did set up residency in The Sandbox gaming metaverse back in 2021, hosting a virtual performance and dropping custom NFTs for fans.

Amazon Music Celebrates the Next Generation of Latino Artists with "The Future Is Ours"

Amazon Music is embarking on a journey to celebrate the future of music with “The Future Is Ours,” a vibrant exploration of style and sound that pays tribute to the groundbreaking Latino artists of the next generation and their fans. This forward-looking initiative includes the release of new music from rising Reggaeton star Ryan Castro featuring Rich the Kid in the track “Rich Rappers.”

“The Future Is Ours” also features an Amazon Music Original by urban sensation Ryan Castro, who stars alongside multiple Latin GRAMMY-nominated Argentinian artist Nicki Nicole in a brand video directed by Spanish visionary Felix Bollain. The video, set in a futuristic urban utopia, was shot in Medellin and Buenos Aires and boasts an original score by Latin Grammy-winning producer Alizzz.

“At Amazon Music, we want to look ahead and celebrate the next generation of Latin music artists and their fans who are fearless in their art, authentic to their core, and intentional with every move. They represent more than just music, and are bringing their creativity to other areas like fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. They are the future and the future is now,” explained Rocio Guerrero, global head of Latin Music at Amazon Music. 

To bring this futuristic vision to life, Amazon Music is transforming its Los Angeles headquarters into a captivating celebration of emerging talent in music and fashion merged with cutting-edge technology. The event will feature runway showcases of Amazon Music merchandise collections and a live performance by Ryan Castro, streamed on Twitch for fans worldwide. The show will be styled by Keyla Marquez, Fashion Director of the Los Angeles Times.

Amazon Music’s “The Future Is Ours” campaign invites music fans to explore viral fashion and beauty trends through playlists like “GRWM” (Get Ready With Me) and “Activao,” which capture the artistic spirit of Generation Z.

“I’m proud to be able to join Amazon Music in celebrating the future of music and culture through this campaign while also bringing my ‘Ghetto Star’ fans along for the journey with this video that includes my take on the future,” said urban artist Ryan Castro. “Last year I ventured into the fashion world with my own clothing line, “Ghetto Med” and since then have been excited to continue growing my presence in it. With Amazon Music integrating my vision and love for fashion into this collaboration means a lot.”
