Freddie Gz has built a name for himself in his hometown of South Carolina with infectious tunes like “Quagmire” and “City Going Ham” and after taking a short hiatus from the music scene the Haitian born rapper looks to takeover the industry on major scale.

After performing at a few showcases at this years SXSW festival, the rapper continues to work and promote his most recent project, Respect Money & Power, which is hosted by a couple of his good hometown friends’, DJ Frosty and Charlamagne Tha God. We recently caught up with Freddie in NYC to speak on his latest project, future plans and much more. Check out the interview below.

Tell me about the Hip-Hop scene in South Carolina?

Theres a lot of dope artist I’ve worked with a lot but Its kind of stagnant right now because of the reach and the small market we are , but theres a lot of people making noise right now because of the internet.

Your most recent mixtape, Respect Money Power is hosted by Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Frosty. How did you end up getting them to host your latest mixtape?

Me and Frosty go way back. A few years ago when I was first coming up I was trying to get my name out there and I was going through various DJ’s but nobody was really giving me the shine. I really wanted the opportunity to have a known DJ host a mixtape series I wanted to start called Goon On Deck, so I hit up on Myspace DJ Frosty and we linked up. After he heard the mixtape he said it was dope and he seen the potential. We’ve been working and been friends ever since. Frosty and Charlamagne are best friends and they know each other for almost 15 years, so I met Charlamagne a while back through Frosty and we just been rocking ever since. Charlamagne did my mixtape, Goon On Deck 2 and we’ve just been working on tapes ever since, so its more than music its actually a dope friendship. I’m proud of what both men are doing and have going on, and I support them fully as well as they support me.

Your Haitian culture is very well represented in your music, how important is it to you to maintain the culture alive in your music?

Oh man very important. I love my country – the Haitian pride has been there since I was young. Just the trial and tribulations that Haitians went through in life makes our pride very strong. We get a lot of love in the hip-hop community because obviously theres a group of Haitians that started in Little Haiti and they created the Zoe Pound and they were pretty relevant in the streets and you know that turned into the Hip-Hop scene as well, so I just felt like even though we get a lot of love from the Hip- Hop community theres not really a Haitian artist representing the culture to the fullest. I’m really looking forward to working with all these artist that have a Haitian background in the future and representing for our people to the fullest.

How long did the recording process for Respect Money Power take? and give me some insight on the project.

It was dope! That was one of the main reasons why I moved up North to lock in studio time. I decided to fallback from my last mixtape which was three years ago, so I took time to regroup and put my own team. We got some young producers, got them into the studio and we helped them build their craft. I decided to do everything in house – all the production is in house – all the features on my mixtape is in house. I got the Architectz to produce on the project, I have Mr. Wonder, Wyclef‘s nephew and a great friend of mine on there as well. The project took about 6-8 months to get all the records we wanted – I probably did about 100 records and we just picked the best 12 that we felt was best rounded for the tape and touch every point that I wanted to get across. I reached out to Charlamagne and Frosty and of course we put it together and put it out there

I have to ask you about your previous single, “Quagmire” which received heavy airplay in South Carolina and other states. How did the song come about and is that on your new mixtape?

[Laughs] Nah, its not on there but it is available on iTunes and still doing strong numbers. The funny story behind that song is that a producer friend of mine called me and said I have a record for you called “Quagmire” like the character on the TV show Family Guy. He didn’t want to tell me much about the song over the phone so I went over to his studio and he played it for me. I started rapping the lyrics to it and I came up with the hook. We finished the record in like 20 minutes and I put it out there. Frosty was on the radio in Columbia at the time and he played it on the radio, a week later it was the most requested song that evening and we took it from there. It was definitely my first big record – my first real exposure to the industry because it reached a lot of places from Cali to Texas and even Power 105 in New York played it.

Is it too late to shoot a video for that song?

People been telling me to do a video for it and we were shooting one, but something happened with the footage. I’m in a new space right now so you never know, maybe I’ll do a video for it this 2014.

Whats the next visual and single for the latest project?

We’re shooting a video for two records – “Nothing New To Me” and also “Pricne Akeem” based on the Coming To America movie. A lot of people been hearing that record and giving great feedback on it. I want to shoot the video and try to make it fun and comical, so definitely be on the look out for that. As far as my music goes, I try to drop content every other week to keep my name relevant with the music sites.

You mentioned your New Jersey based record label being a major part of this project and good friends of yours – How did you end up linking with them up North being that you lived in South Carolina?

I’m from South Carolina, but my mother for the majority has always lived in New Jersey. I was up here one summer working a 9-5 when when I met these guys. We’ve been friends ever since – my day one n*ggas. We decided to make our own label and do our own thing. We’ve seen how the game is shifting over to independent movements, so thats something that we want to strive for until the right situation happens. We all have the same outlook in life and our grind is slightly different than most people thats why we last this long.

What else can we expect from in the near future?

We have a short film Respect Money Power, so I’m making my acting debut. We have the next mixtape coming – I don’t know what I’m going to name it yet, but we’ve got some features already from Cap-1 and another one from 2 Chainz. I want my next project to be even bigger and better, so I’m looking forward to working with some big players in the game. I’m dropping that in a few months.

Dom Kennedy made his mark at SXSW Wednesday night with his OPM & Friends showcase at 1100 Warehouse in Austin, Texas. The show which featured some of the brightest up-and-coming artist from the West put the crowd in notice of the super talented MC’s hailing from the left side of the coast. The good folks over at OPM, 40’s & Shorties, Black Manufacturing, and Just Be Dope helped put together a spectacular show that people will surely rememeber at this years 2014 SXSW.

The show featured an array of artist that brought their caliber raps to light and full display. The three man crew, Pac Div would set the tone for the entire night with thier contagious single “Anti-Freeze” which put the crowd in a frenzy. The group would then go on to perform a catalogue of their greatest hits. Another three man crew that would follow-up Pac Div, would be the Ohio natives, Fly Union, who are associated with the West through their California based label. The trio would give the attendees a dose of their favorite joints from TGTC and Super Pack 2.

Rome Fortune and Buddy would hit the stage to bring to bring their tales from the West to life on the mic for those in Texas. Audio Push would continue the Cali vibes with their Hit-Boy produced track, “Theme Song” “Shine” “Turn Down for What” and more from their 2013 critically acclaimed mixtape, Come As Your Are.

The night continued with the presence of Inglewood rapper Casey Veggies serving his usual dose of peas & carrots to all those present. The young MC would go through a bunch of tracks from his previous catalogues: Sleeping in Class, Customized Greatly Vol. 3, and his much acclaimed Life Changes.

The night would end with the Headliner of the night, Dom Kennedy and his OPM artist. Dom would bring on stage with Niko G4, Zeke and to the surprise of all, former incarcerated rapper and longtime friend of Dom, Jay 305. The OPM leader would perform some of his biggest hits from the Yellow Album, From The Westside with Love, The Original Dom Kennedy, and other of his much demanded projects. Of course, Dom would turn the place upside down with “My Type of Party” “1997” and his Get Home Safely melodic track “Dominic.” Dom would give the crowd in hand an exuberant performance that would last for more than an hour.

Supreme will be linking up once again with skate manufacturing company Vans and Comme des Garcons Shirt for a new collection. Three different styles will be introduced in the collection – 2 Authentic with polka-dots and stripes and a Sk8-Hi sneaker featuring the polka-dot and stripe pattern including an image of famed skater Harold Hunter.

Converse held a special panel event yesterday afternoon at their Converse Rubber Tracks location in Brooklyn New York to celebrate the release of their next innovative track from the Three Artists. One Song series, which is celebrated every year by the American life style company.

This year’s Three Artists. One Song featured the legendary musicians, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon from The Clash, Odd Future’s R&B crooner Frank Ocean and Mad Decent ‘s head honcho, Diplo. The song is entitled “Hero”and is available to music fans globally for free download starting March 10 on conversemusic.tumblr.com.

The panel was hosted by MTV/Sirius XM host, Sway Calloway and featured the presence of Diplo, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. Frank Ocean was not in attendance due to his hectic work schedule, but we did get to learn the process behind creating the record the guest speakers

“Hero” was recorded partly at Studio 13 in London, England and remotely on the road in Hawaii and Los Angeles. The final result of this collaboration is a very outstanding body of work that you should be on the lookout for on March 10.

It’s been a quiet for Hip-Hop beefs as of lately, but friction might be brewing in the R&B world after this August Alsina interview with Rap-Up.com. The New Orleans singer was recently asked to comment on the involvement of Trey Songz and Chris Brown on the remix of his hit record “I Luv This Shit.”

During the interview August Alsina had some not-so-kind words for Trey Songz saying that he “don’t really f*ck” with the R&B crooner and does not get along with him at the moment. When it came to Chris Brown, Alsina said that Chris is his “n*gga” and always try to uplift the troublesome singer with positivity. College Park up-and-coming rapper, Kap G has been creating a major buzz in the South with his street anthems, “Tatted Like A Migo” and “Jose Got Dem Tacos.” The young artist of Mexican decent has been holding it down for the Migos of the South and delivers a brand new track and visual off his upcoming mixtape, Like A Mexican.

After the announcement of the G-Star x Pharrell ‘Raw for the Oceans’ collaboration at this years NYFW, the apparel company and Pharrell have decided to create a video that is narrated by Pharrell himself, in which they help spread the word of the campaign even further.

In the visual Pharrell explains the process in which the jeans will be developed and and how the collab will help the environment. The Neptune co-founder also created an exclusive version of his song “Happy” for the video.

The Truth from North Carolina

WWE gears up for another big PPV event tomorrow with Elimination Chamber. The show will take place in the city of Minneapolis, MN and will be the last PPV before the mega one of them all, WrestleMania.

Before heading out to the City of Lakes, we caught up with one of the most exciting wrestlers on the WWE roster, R-Truth to discuss the current state of his character, his experience in the music business before getting involved with wrestling, his encounter with the late great, Tupac and much more.

A picture of you and Wiz Khalifa recently circled the net after a Monday Night Raw in the city of Los Angeles backstage, was it your first time meeting Wiz? and from what I hear a recording between you both is in the talks – will that be for his upcoming project or something that you are working on?

On mine, but if he’s doing something that he wants me to be a part of I would be glad to do so. That night was actually Wiz’s first WWE show and he was blown away. I got a chance to talk with him and told him I was working on my next album and asked him if he would be down to be part of it which he agreed – I asked him if he was down to spit a 16 on my next album, and he said “Let me know when, I’m ready” – I asked him if he would be down to walk down the ring with me at any given point he told me he was down for whatever, so that was huge for me. Especially being a fan of his music, the collaboration is going to be banging.

What other big name features can we expect on your upcoming album besides Wiz Khalifa?

I’ve spoken already with Juvenile. I’m in talks right now with DMX and MGK. I spoke a little bit with E-40 about doing something but thats not confirmed yet, but I’m still working on features. I already got John Cena on two tracks and thats banging already, so expect that.

What made you get into the music business?

I pretty much grew up in music. My dad played the guitar, so I’ve always had the ear and the love for music. Growing up in North Carolina the music was everywhere. As a matter of fact, when I was younger I would always attend the Jack the Rapper Music Convention in Atlanta that was held every year. I met so many celebrities from there – I met Tupac, Eazy-E, Kwame, Chubb Rock, Tracey Spencer, Digital Underground and the list goes on. I used to be the opening act for artist of this caliber, so I’ve been doing this for years now.

How was your encounter with Tupac?

That was awesome. I met Tupac pretty much right after he did the movie Juice, so he was already with Digital Underground, but he was on his own rise at this time. He was very humble, down to earth, a very cool guy. In fact, he actually paid for my food a couple of times – I mean he was very humble dude.

How do you feel about the current state of the R-Truth character and whats your major goal for this year in the ring?

Right now the R-Truth character is pretty much going to the ring and handling business. Me personally, I’m working on this album and working on myself – perfecting my craft every week and everyday. I’m trying to get to that next level. I’m trying to have that talked about match at WrestleMania, if its not this WrestleMania it’s going to be the next WrestleMania because thats why you in this business for, to get into the main event – the Super Bowl of wrestling, and that is WrestleMania.

What has been your biggest moment in WWE thus far?

I think my biggest moment was my heel turn. When I tuned on everybody and was calling the WWE Universe Little Jimmys. I had so many conspiracy theories going on inside my head.

Where is Little Jimmy nowadays?

Lil Jimmy is actually back with his mom.

Did you enjoy being a heel more than being a babyface?

I actually enjoy both. I feel like everybody got a little bit of good and bad in them. The heel part in me was able to leash out what I wanted to and it was very enjoyable. I can play either role at the end of the day.

In the recent weeks, I’ve seen you working with up-and-coming wrestler Xavier Woods. What advice are giving him and all the young wrestlers trying to crack into the wrestling business?

I give them the same advice I was given, and that is learn every second you can in this business. I’ve been in this industry for about 16-17 years already and I’m still learning. I tell all the up-and-coming wrestlers learn what you can, listen, walk the right path, get what you can out of it and perfect your craft.

Your theme song, “What’s Up” is major in the WWE Universe. Give me two ideal MC’s that wish could get on the remix of your record?

Oh man, Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa.

Will we get another version of “What’s Up” in the near future or you sticking with the original record?

It’s already done and you know what, I spoke with Triple H about that and “What’s Up” is still banging – it still works and we always know if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but I already created a whole different “What’s Up” and it’s riding just as well.

Who are some of the artist that you are currently listening to?

I listen to Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, T.I., Juvenile, DMX, MGK, I love Eminem and of course I’m always going to listen to my Tupac and Big Daddy Kane.

If you had four other wrestlers to choose from, dead or alive, to be a part of your Survivor Series team, what four wrestlers would you choose?

I would definitely have to grab John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Big Show and Mark Henry for some size.

Who do you think will walk out champion at this years Elimination Chamber match?

Oh man, I don’t know, but I think Randy Orton because he’s not letting anything go. He’s being very creativity crafty right now.

Tell me how are you celebrating Black History month?

Working on my music and hanging with my kids – teaching them about our history and the importance of this month.

In your opinion, who has been the most influential black American leader of all-time and what about his leadership do you admire?

It has be Dr. Martin Luther King. I mean there has been a lot of great black leaders that have paved the way for us, but I think Martin is the most talked about, he’s the most pronounced, he’s the most known – it don’t matter where you go to, you are always going to see that street sign “Martin Luther King Boulevard.”

Spanish Harlem rapper, Bodega BAMZ brought his rap version of salsa yesterday to BET’s “The Backroom.” BAMZ, a former Unsigned Hype alumni, violated the BET booth with some ferocious bars and a freestyle that demonstrates the hunger of the Latin MC.

Last night at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, Pharrell Williams, Creative Director of Bionic Yarn, announced the creation of “RAW for the Oceans,” a collaboration between denim brand G-Star Raw and Bionic Yarn.

The collection between both powerhouse brands will be made with recycled materials from the oceans and will help remove plastics from the sea and its shorelines, as well as integrate it back into revenue. The main purpose of the collaboration is to protect the oceans across the world from the harmful and deteriorating plastic pollution.

The press conference featured a number of influential speakers – Captain Paul Watson, Daniella Russo, John Davis, Tyson Toussant, DR. Ian Kerr who all took the stage to speak on the the harmful usage of plastic and provided some helpful tips on how to think outside the box when it came to using the ductile material. The eclectic group of people would also present short clips of the helpless sea creatures who die everyday from the dangerous particles thrown in the sea.

Pharrell Williams would close out the night as the last guest speaker, and provided some insight as to why he became part of the “RAW for the Oceans” campaign and his vision with the collaboration. The super producer and artist told the crowd in attendance that he hopes collaborations like this can help create an eco-freindly environment and a better place to live in the future.

This news may sound like a surprise to many , but WWE superstar and former champion John Cena recently surpassed NBA player Kobe Bryant to become the most-liked active US athlete on Facebook with more than 18.6 million followers.

The WWE superstar has been the face of the company for more than 10 years and continues to be one of the biggest athletes to bring in revenue for their brand. Cena is the No. 7 most followed US athlete in the world and surpasses the likes of LeBron James, Roger Federer Kevin Durant and more.

It would not be surprising if by the end of the year John Cena “The Peoples Champ” becomes the #1 athlete of the world.

FILA will be releasing one of their most iconic basketball sneakers of all-time KJ7. The signature sneaker is in honor of Phoenix Suns’ All-Star guard Kevin Johnson.

The KJ7 has been re-created as close as possible to the original model. In addition, both Kid’s and Infant’s sizes will also be available for this release. Ty Dolla $ign has been enjoying the fruits of success with his current smash single “Paranoid.” Not only is the record climbing the charts on the Billboard Hot 100, but his most recent EP released through Taylor Gang Records and Atlantic Records peaked at #2 on iTunes the day of it’s release.

During his stay in New York, the Los Angeles native stopped by The Source office to discuss a number of topics including his latest body of work, the Beach House EP. Ty also informs us that he will indeed be a part of the highly successful summer tour, Under The Influence.

Dolla $ign also tells us about the Taylor Gang compilation album that is already done and full of joints, and says that his solo LP will be called Free TC and it’s tentatively scheduled to drop in the summer time.

During our sit-down with Ty we find out that the 28 year-old artist was a huge fan of
J Dilla and his production and lets us know his favorite beats from the late and talented producer. TY$ also reveals to us that John Mayer is probably one of the greatest musicians out and he’s killing a lot of people in the game.

Congrats to Atlanta rapper, 2 Chainz on being the next Hip-Hop superstar to have his own signature shoe via adidas Originals.

The news comes after several sites dedicated to the sneaker culture, revealed an image of what is said to be the upcoming silhouette. In the pic you can see that this “2 Good 2 Be T.R.U.” Top Ten adidas Originals shoe by 2 Chainz will be mostly decorated in black along with gold accents.

A Hustle Gang compilation album is on it’s way sometime this year, and as TI’s camp gears up for the release, Shade 45 DJ and TMZ’s favorite personality, DJ Whoo Kid has released the very first single from the collective, which is also part of his SXEW mixtape that he did alongside DJ Skee and DJ MLK. The track was produced by 1500 or Nothing.

According to Whoo Kid his mixtape with Skee and MLK and can drop at any moment, so be on the lookout for that and also that Hustle Gang compilation.
